The intense historical heritage of the Rossfeld is the starting point for the architectural intervention. The geometries of the existing urban development represent a strong contrast to the naturally grown landscape and thematize the human designed and attained forest clearing.
The project’s dimensions refer to the neighboring buildings, which were planned and constructed in the 1970’s. The smallest of the new buildings takes on the basic grid on the right corner of the existing edifice, accomplishing through that a strong connection between them. Both seven-floor buildings open up to the south, define the big courtyard and integrate the Mathew church and amphitheater through the slight rotation in the plan.
The double-height balconies on the building corners are private but have an open design, which allows for different relations to the neighbors. The living spaces above open generously and can be transformed into loggias in the summer.
Except for the basement, which will be constructed with reinforced concrete, the buildings are conceived as pure wood constructions. The weather protection will have a ventilated flamed larch wood paneling.
